Cohousing?
What Is Cohousing?
First and foremost, cohousing is about the social fabric of community and a sense of belonging. It is shaped by connectedness and care for the individual and well-being of the whole.
Cohousing communities are small-scale planned communities where neighbors are… friends!
Sometimes called “The Modern Village” these communities are organized as condominiums or Homeowners Associations. The fully equipped, privately owned homes are centered around a community building called a ‘Common House’. The Common House is considered an extension of one’s personal living space and always includes a kitchen and spacious dining room because one of the great pleasures of cohousing is preparing and sharing community dinners on a voluntary, rotating basis. The Common House also includes many amenities for community members such as a library, crafts room, sitting areas, TV room/games room, guest rooms … and more!
Cohousing communities are “custom” neighborhoods, planned and designed with a great deal of input from its residents. Community members manage the community themselves. They are non-political and non-ideological. Cohousing communities enjoy the economic and environmental benefits of sharing resources, commonly held space and amenities; Cohousing is a model of authentic “peak communities” with true economic, environmental and social sustainability.
