About Us

Falls Church Cohousing was founded in December 2009 to foster a social network of people who share a desire to live in a community with purpose in the “Little City” of Falls Church, Virginia. Participants are learning, organizing, and growing an authentic sustainable community through Cohousing Collaborative’s Outreach Program.

We are working to create a sustainable community in Falls Church, a city “inside the Beltway” of the Washington, DC area.  We’re looking to meet others who are interested in exploring this wonderful city-with-a-small-town-feeling as a place to live an active, purposeful life.

Our cohousing properties will be organized as condominiums.  But, far in advance of condos that you buy of the real estate market, we, as charter members of this organization, intend to have a voice in the design and construction of an urban, “green” condo complex that is good for our environment, and will provide us long term economic savings in energy costs.

Our land choice will give us access to the many amenities of the revitalized business district of Falls Church, such as:

  • access to public services within an easy walk
  • and proximity to the beauty of nearby tree-filled neighborhoods
  • a weekend farmer’s market only a few blocks away
  • the local library only a few blocks away,
  • public transportation, including the Washington DC Metro rail
  • a bike path that is part of the US rails to trails program

What puts the “cohousing” in the condominium?  Here’s just a few ideas this group is discussing.  Remember that we are still early in the process, so these are still ideas.  But if they need ferreting out, we get a say about where to cut back, and the builder is not solely deciding for us!

  • a smaller (but not too small) condo space (about 20-25 units) that offers a good selection of neighbors, without overwhelming.
  • a building layout that is consciously designed to increase interaction through shared common amenities (such as a BIG and centrally location community room and kitchen)
  • a Van Gogh room.  A place to share expressive stuff, such as arts, craft, or to perform small repairs, leaving your condo in better shape to be paint free!
  • an exercise room,
  • A TV Area
  • a rooftop garden and sitting area.

Now don’t get us wrong about how important privacy is to us!  Although we are hoping for lots of opportunity to do things together in a common area, MANY of us are big-time intraverts!  None of us wishes to give up our own private amenities, except to give a piece of space toward some shared places, like those mentioned, above.

Want to know more? There are events each month – picnics, walks, potlucks – for us to get to know each other better and make new friends. Check our website for details!
